Hi, I have had a really nasty infection in my tooth and the dentist prescribed me Amoxycillin to reduce the inflamation and kill the infection. After 4 days of taking the anti-biotics, the infection spread and I have had to have the tooth pulled out today. Apparently I was supposed to stop taking my RA drugs (Leflunomide and Enbrel) whilst I was taking the anti-biotics. Does anyone know why? I didnt stop taking my RA drugs and clearly the anti-biotics havent worked. Does one set of drugs counteract the other? Any help would be appreciated.

Happy New Year to everyone, may the new year bring you all health and happiness.

Happy new year Louise.

Sorry to hear you have had such a bad time of it with your tooth, I am not expert on all this and you will get better advice, however I have just started taking infliximab with leflunomide and was told that if I am ill/ taking antibiotics I must inform the nurse who does my infusion straight away as I think I would have to stop the treatment.

Wishing you all the best.

hi Louise

it will be the enbrel causing the issue. You will have to stop it with an infection.

The leflunomide you might be able to stay on, seek your rheumatology nurse opinion but that Enbrel will almost certainly stop. You might have to come into hospital and have an antibiotic drip for a short time as your body is not able to stand up to this sort of vicious infection.

anti-tnfs are very powerful drugs. serious infections can start quickly and you need urgent medical assistance. If things get suddenly worse, please get yourself to local A and E. PLEASE!

Hope the infection clears fast.

Hi

Thanks for your replies, unfortunately I had injected the Enbrel on the Monday and the infection developed on the Tuesday so I was unable to stop that drug. Although I have had the tooth out I am still sure there is an infection as my jaw is sore going into my ear. I will try to get some advice from my RA Nurse on Tuesday, in the mean time, if I feel worse I will go to A and E.

Thank you both for your support

Louise

If you have a 'dry socket' following the extraction, you have my utmost sympathy. It is truly awful and I needed tramadol before anything remotely touched the pain. The only other relief was cloves oil, applied to the socket with a cotton bud. I really hate the taste but it worked enough to allow me to sleep.

Don't suffer in silence Louise - your GP will prescribe something which will work. I swear I would sooner deliver all 5 of my children again then go through that experience again! Hope you are soon on the mend XX Ailsa

Thanks Ailsa

It truly has been the worst pain and the most persistant pain that I have ever felt in my life. Your thoughts are much appreciated.

Hi I really feel for you I have been on enbrel for 2yrs and had 4 minor operations, and have had to stop the enbrel each time. Did the nurse not tell you to stop it while taking antibiotics etc when they came on the initial visit on how to use it, if they didn't thats a bit off. Just be careful and don't do your next injection when it's due just to let the antibiotics have a chance, good luck and I hope you feel better soon.
Love and hugs
